The playground in American culture can trace its roots to the late 19th century and the social movements of that era. In response to the rapid urbanization and heavy industry of the time, many people felt that children were being denied a safe environment in which to play and develop the physical and social skills needed for adulthood. Boston is generally considered the birthplace of the playground. As a means of trying to prevent accidental injuries, many schools have incorporated the idea of using rubber matting instead of asphalt as the primary surface for their playgrounds.
